Tuesday marks the arrival of the 2021 California Gubernatorial Recall Election, the last day for Californians to vote on whether Gov. Gavin Newsom will complete his first term in charge of the state or have the remainder served by one of the candidates looking to unseat him.
A total of 46 candidates (45 following the withdrawal of former Rep. Doug Ose) filed to run in case a majority of voters choose “no” on the first of two questions on the ballot: should Gavin Newsom be recalled, and who shall serve the remainder of his term until next year’s elections.
According to most statewide polls, support for the recall has apparently declined despite the wide berth alt-right radio host and Republican candidate Larry Elder carries over the other candidates in the race, including Democrat and YouTuber Kevin Paffrath and Republicans John Cox and former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer.

10:30: Despite repeating claims about the state of California during Newsom’s tenure in California, Elder appears to concede the race while other Republicans like Cox and former reality star Caitlyn Jenner also appear to concede.
We will continue to follow the results into the night, but preliminary results look clear: the recall did not pass and Gavin Newsom will serve out his turn until he is back on the ballot on Nov. 8, 2022.

9:00: Newsom speaks with supporters with praise to those who voted against the recall. Sounding emotional, he said., “Everyone wants to feel respected…safe, protected…the former president put out saying this election was rigged – democracy is not a football, you don’t throw it around. It’s more like [an] antique vase.”
“Trumpism is not dead in this country.”
8:45: Newsom is expected to already speak about the recall as – despite less than 20% of the California Secretary of State’s voting results counted – the effort to recall the governor appears to fail just as fast as it began.
8:25: Within Los Angeles County, voters have so far voted overwhelmingly against the recall with 76.32% versus less than a quarter of votes voting “Yes.” Elder’s ahead with 36.75% of L.A. County votes so far, Paffrath behind at 11.86% and Kevin Faulconer at 10.08%. Below them, candidates have vote percentages in single-digit percentages.
8:20: Early results are showing voters are overwhelmingly against the recall with 69.9% of voters choosing “No” on the ballot and 30.1% of voters choosing “Yes.” Despite looking like an early victory for Newsom, Larry Elder currently leads the pack of candidates with 40.3% of the vote – a leap from the second place candidate Kevin Paffrath at 12%.
8:00: The polls are closed. Votes in Los Angeles County still have yet to be released. One percent of precincts are partially reporting with over an over 70% lead between “No” votes and “Yes” votes, thus far looking favorable to Gov. Newsom. It’s still too early to tell.
